Martin Johnson has resigned as England head coach and the RFU may now turn to New Zealand's World Cup winner Graham Henry.

Sky Bet have made World Cup winning coach Graham Henry the 13/8 favourite to replace Martin Johnson as England team manager.

Johnson today resigned from his position after three-and-a-half years after overseeing a dismal World Cup campaign which saw England exit at the quarter-final stage to France after being beset with off-the-field problems.

New Zealander Henry, 65, retired from the All Blacks post after leading them to glory on home soil, and could be tempted by the chance to restore England to the top of world rugby following their recent slide.

If the RFU look for an English-born coach then Northampton boss Jim Mallinder seems likely to head their wish list and he is 2nd favourite at 7/2.

Also likely to be in the frame is former South Africa coach Nick Mallet who is currently in charge of Italy. He is third in the market at 6/1.

Sky Bet’s Simon McMinn said: “The RFU will have to move fast to appoint Johnson’s successor with the Six Nations just over two months away which is why Graham Henry is a perfect candidate for job.

“He’s just guided the All Blacks to World Cup victory and he’s now out of contract meaning the RFU wouldn’t have to negotiate a release fee. On top of this he has already spoken of his desire to return to the Northern Hemisphere.”
