Ireland have been dealt a massive blow with the news that hooker Jerry Flannery will miss the rest of the Rugby World Cup with a calf injury.

Flannery, who came on for the last 19 minutes of Ireland’s 22-10 win over USA last Sunday, tore his left calf in training on Tuesday and has been ruled out for at least six weeks.

His place in the squad has now been handed to Damien Varley.

Ireland team manager Paul McNaughton said: "It is very disappointing for Jerry to have suffered this injury.

"With the fact he is out for four to six weeks, we needed to make the decision to fly Damien Varley down as soon as possible.

"Sean Cronin will step into the replacements seamlessly this weekend which shows the importance of having experience and depth in the squad."

Ireland, who are on offer at 50/1 with Bet365 to win the World Cup, go up against second favourites Australia (10/3) at Eden Park on Saturday.
