Coleraine Man Campbell 2-1 To Win Medal In Olympic Rowing Final

Chris Carter - 15 Aug 2008

Northern Ireland’s Alan Campbell is rated a 10-1 chance by bookmakers William Hill to secure a Gold medal, and 2-1 to win any medal in Saturday’s Mens Single Sculls final. The Coleraine-man battled through to the pain barrier after a poor start in the semi final, and  his dramatic sprint finish earned him second place in his heat, and more importantly a place in Saturday mornings Olympic final.

The 25 year old became the first British or Northern Irish rower to reach the single skulls final since 1980 – which is an amazing achievement considering he had major knee surgery just three months prior to the Beijing games.

William Hill Irish spokesman Tony Kenny commented “Alan’s Olympic Odyssey has really caught the imagination of the people in the province” He continued “We’ve started to see loads of money for him to win a medal on Saturday morning, and with the determination he’s showed over the last few months, you’d be a fool to rule him out”

Mens Single Sculls: (William Hill Bet)  6-5 Synek (Czech Rep.), 2-1 Drysdale (New Zealand),  7-2 Karonen (Sweden), 13-2 Tufte (Norway), 10-1 Campbell (GB&NI), 20-1 Maeyens (Belgium)
