The Duke Of York looks a seriously high class renewal and the field contains a number of horses that could realistically go on to challenge at the top table in the sprinting division this season.  Indeed, Regal Parade and Markab have already tasted sprint success at the highest level and both will be popular on their seasonal reappearances, despite the fact Markab has to shoulder a Group penalty in the 6f showpiece.

French import Dalghar is interesting on his debut for trainer Andrew Balding and the former Alain de Royer-Dupre inmate brings some top class form to the table, while Godolphin will rely on Delegator as the highly regarded miler drops back to sprint distances under the guidance of Frankie Dettori and Saeed bin Suroor.

The most interesting runner in the race looks to be Richard Fahey’s ROSE BLOSSOM (11/1, Coral) who has been the subject of rave reviews from her trainer recently.  The daughter of Pastoral Pursuits has always had plenty of ability and the blistering pace she shows at the start of her races is particularly impressive.  Jockey Paul Hanagan believes she has wintered well and she could be a genuine contender for top honours in the sprinting division this season.

A winner of a Group Three over course and distance in July, she can continue the good form of her stable in one of the most intriguing races of the season so far.

The opening race of the day (Infinity Tyres Handicap at 1.30) looks a wide-open handicap and racing fans will be looking to get the meeting off to a good start with a winner in the first.

Roger Varian’s Pekan Star and  Henry Cecil’s Diescentric both look like the type of unexposed horse that could quite easily snatch a race of this nature, but it could be worth keeping things simple and siding with John Gosden’s withdrawn Lincoln favourite TAQLEED (6/1, Ladbrokes) who finally gets his conditions at York.

Wary about running the Cambridgeshire sixth on fast going, Gosden has been careful to wait for the right opportunity for his talented four-year-old and with just four starts under his belt, there is every chance there could be a whole lot more to come from the unexposed son of Shamardal.

Nick Wilby’s selections:

3.00 – Rose Blossom (11/1, Coral) NAP
1.30 – Taqleed (6/1, Ladbrokes) nb
