William Hill kept Was onside for the Oaks and were duly rewarded as the filly claimed victory in Friday’s Classic

Victory by the Aidan O’Brien-trained Was made it back-to-back big price winners of the Investec Oaks when obliging at odds of 20-1 in the famous fillies’ Classic.

William Hill – who were rock bottom 18-1 in this morning’s prices – respected the filly’s chances, and with 50-1 available elsewhere in the market, avoided laying the winner.  With their usual ‘best prices, best horses’ policy the firm instead took on leading Ballydoyle hopeful Maybe – offering a standout 4-1 price.

The betting giants reported strong turnover on the race, with early figures suggesting turnover will match the levels of last year, with the result appearing one of the best in the book.

Kate Miller, PR Director for William Hill told Bettingpro: ‘’Punters may have been shocked but our odds-compilers have liked this beautifully-bred filly for some time and we were desperate to keep her onside, and take on the favourite instead. Tomorrow is truly D-Day with a potential caning coming from Camelot, but we’ve boosted the coffers early nonetheless.’’

Was has been installed as a 33-1 chance by William Hill to win the Prix de L’Arc de Triomphe in October, and a 12-1 chance in the closing classic of the year – The St Leger.
