Wayne Rooney's first racehorse finishes last at Chester

Wayne Rooney’s first ever racehorse runner, Pippy, finished last of eight on his debut in the Manor House Stables Lily Agnes Conditions Stakes at Chester.

The colt by Exceed And Excel, who cost the Manchester United and England striker £60,000, could never go the pace as All Fur Coat made all the running at odds of 9/2.

Rooney was at Chester with his wife Coleen and his United team-mate Michael Owen, to whom the race’s sponsor, Manor House Stables, belongs.

Pippy is trained by Tom Dascombe, who is based at Manor House Stables.

The two-year-old was sent off at 9/1 on his first racecourse appearance in the pink and white colours of the Rooneys.

He broke from the stalls well enough but could not keep up with the leaders and was always behind as All Fur Coat, ridden by Franny Norton, set off at a blistering gallop considering the soft ground and could not be caught.

But Pippy will benefit from the experience and next time out is unlikely to be given such a tough task as three of his opponents at Chester had already won a race.

Before the contest, Dascombe had expressed high hopes for Pippy’s career, saying: “He is a speedy, proper five-furlong horse who will be winning soon.”

The Rooneys also have a runner at Chester on Thursday as another juvenile, Tomway, makes his debut in the Equestrianartuk.com Maiden Stakes.

A colt by Sakhee’s Secret, he is also trained by Dascombe and will be ridden by Robert Winston.
