Tricky Trickster and Denman hold off Vic in National market

Becher Chase victory solidifies position of Dessie Hughes' challenger in the market but two are shorter in the National betting.

Bookmakers may have reacted to Vic Venturi's Becher Chase victory by making him Grand National favourite but Betfair punters clearly need more persuading.

While High Street layers made the nine-year-old the early favourite following Sunday's win, customers on the exchange are not so ready to accept his claims. Tricky Trickster (19.5) and Denman (24.0 are both ahead of Vic Venturi (26.0) in the betting.

Dessie Hughes' charge beat eight home including National veterans Idle Talk and Irish Raptor (both second fence fallers) to land the three mile two furlong Aintree test.

The top weight was a big drifter in the betting on the day but was a ready winner on soft going.

Hughes will now definitely point the horse at the biggest race in UK horseracing, saying: "There is one target with him now. he's entitled to come back for it [the National], isn't he?"
