Sandown good, good to firm for racing

- 4 Jul 2009

There will be no worries over the participation of Sea The Stars in today’s Coral-Eclipse, as it was confirmed this morning that a dry night at Sandown has dried the ground to good, good to firm in places.

With temperatures set to reach as high as 24 degrees on Saturday, the ground can only get firmer and the news will come as a pleasant surprise to John Oxx, who had been worried he would have to withdraw his Guineas and Derby winning hero from the race.

The clerk of Sandown racecourse, Andrew Cooper, had been confident that the showers the course received on Friday night would not soften the ground up by any great deal and the news of the change in going to good to firm came as a relief to many.

With the participation of Sea The Stars in today’s feature, the Coral-Eclipse, no longer in doubt, he remains a solid 8/13 favourite for the race, while in contrast, third-favourite Rip Van Winkle has been allowed to drift to as big as 7/1 on Betfair.
