Royal Ascot 2012 will as ever begin with a bang, as three Group Ones open this most prestigious of meetings.

Frankel will be first up in the Queen Anne stakes, a Group One race for older horses where Henry Cecil's superstar will blast off over a straight mile.

Race two is the King's Stand Stakes over the minimum trip of five furlongs. This is another Group One where some of the fastest horses on the planet will take each other on at full speed straight from the gates.

Race three is the St James's Palace Stakes, again a Group One and again over a mile though this time on the round course. This one is for three-year-olds only though and goes some way to establishing which is the best among the classic generation.

The Group two Coventry Stakes is race four and will feature the best of the early-season two-year-olds. This is over six furlongs and is usually won by a quality and progressive animal.

Next up is the first non-handicap of the meeting, the Ascot Stakes over two and a half miles. Unsurprisingly for a race at this distance this is often contested by horses from powerful National Hunt stables.

The final race on day one is the Windsor Castle Stakes a Listed race for two-year-olds. This is run over five furlongs and has produced winners at 100-1, 33-1 and 20-1 in recent years.
