Peterborough Chase (Newbury) Wednesday Preview and Tips

Related Articles

The Peterborough Chase over 2m4f, twice abandoned at its Huntingdon home, is being run at Newbury on Wednesday.

BREEDSBREEZE (15/2 Paddy Power)
A prolific winner in his novice season, he's been off the track since taking a crashing fall at Ascot in February 2009 (sustained a leg injury and was subsequently fired). It remains to be seen whether he's retained his ability and jockey bookings - stand-in stable jockey Noel Fehily rides Twist Magic - suggests he's the stable second string.

DEEP PURPLE (7/2 William Hill)
Sluiced home in this contest last season, supplementing his earlier success in the Charlie Hall Chase, but was then pulled up in the King George after breaking a blood vessel. Ran a respectable third in this year's Charlie Hall and is reported in fine fettle by his trainer Evan Williams. A 10lb penalty makes life tough for him, though.

HERECOMESTHETRUTH (28/1 Stan James)
Went off 7/1 for last year's renewal but was well held in second when blundering and unseating his rider at the last. Has since left Paul Nicholls and cut no ice on his first run for Chris Gordon at Exeter, when ducking out and unseating his rider at the 18th. He clearly has a mind of his own and is best swerved.

MASTER MEDIC (12/1 Blue Square)
Won four times on the spin between October 2008 and October 2009, going up 40lb in the ratings in the process, but has not been out since being pulled up in last season's King George. Likely to find the competition too hot here.

OLLIE MAGERN (40/1 Stan James)
Veteran, front-running chaser who was landing his 13th career start in a handicap chase at Perth in May. Normally at his best in the Charlie Hall but could only finish fourth in that contest last time out and is not the force of old.

TARTAK (7/2 Stan James)
Is often let down by his jumping but is undoubtedly talented, as he showed when fourth in the Melling Chase, and went off a red-hot favourite for the Old Roan Chase last time. He was not disgraced in third but has now been beaten on his last eight starts and is still looking for his first win outside novice company.

TWIST MAGIC (7/4 Paddy Power)
Moody sort but is capable of brilliance, especially at Sandown where he's just about unbeatable, and would have been a short price for this year's Tingle Creek at that track. No surprise he swerved the rescheduled race at Cheltenham as he's thrown in some shockers there, and this track will suit him better, although he's probably best going right-handed. Tackles two and a half miles for the first time on his 30th career start.

VERDICT:
Full marks to racing's hierarchy for rearranging this race after Sunday's abandonment and what a cracking race in prospect. As for the winner, much revolves around whether Twist Magic will put his best foot forward (far from certain) and stay the distance. Connections think he will stay but I'm not so sure and he looks one to take on at a short price. Second favourite TARTAK is a frustrating character but he did beat Deep Purple by seven lengths at Aintree in April and now gets a whopping 10lb from that rival and Twist Magic. I see connections have decided to fit a tongue tie for the first time and, in the hope he fares better as a result, he's given another chance at 7/2 (Stan James).
