Race sponsors bet365 make the Luca Cumani-trained Mad Rush their 4/1 favourite for this historic race, and it’s easy to see why as he has ticks in several boxes.
Cumani, who has been responsible for the winners of two of the past three renewals, is a master at targeting his horses, so you can be certain that he’s had this race in mind for Mad Rush for some time. The horse has a progressive profile too, having put in a career-best effort last time out when second in the Duke Of Edinburgh Handicap at Royal Ascot. That was his fourth runner-up finish on the bounce, all in handicaps, so you can’t knock his consistency either. However, a 5lb rise in the ratings since Ascot might just anchor him again and I'd prefer to look elsewhere for a bit of value.
Andrew Balding is another trainer who loves a tilt at these big handicaps and his Buccellati must come into calculations. Bet365 make him their 8/1 second favourite, which is easily the best price on offer (6/1 in places). He too ran a cracker at Royal Ascot when beaten little over a length into fourth in the Wolferton Handicap over 1m2f. He probably found the trip on the prevailing fast ground a bit on the sharp side that day, so he should be capable of better over this trip of 1m4f and on ground with a bit more juice in it.
Pippa Greene (9/1 Betfred) and Eradicate (14/1 Stan James) are others to consider, but the one that jumps off the page as far as an ante post bet is concerned is CAMPS BAY.
He could only manage seventh in the aforementioned Duke Of Edinburgh, but ran a lot better than his final placing suggests. He was disputing last approaching Swinley Bottom and it was to his credit he was only beaten four lengths by the winner Sugar Ray, especially as he had to be switched to get a clear run. He runs off the same mark here and I fancy him to turn the tables on the second Mad Rush, King Charles (third) and Young Mick (fourth) on the revised terms. Trained by Amanda Perrett, who does well with her older horses, he represents solid each way value at 12/1 with the sponsors.
The race is live on Channel 4 (due off 3.35pm), so punters should head to bet365 for their Channel 4 offer. Back a winner at 4/1 or bigger with the Stoke outfit in any race televised live on Channel 4 and they’ll give you a free bet to the same on the next live Channel 4 race!
