Aidan O’Brien has admitted he is taking a bit of a gamble saddling his Irish 2000 Guineas and St James’ Palace Stakes winner Mastercraftsman in the Dirt Mile at the Breeders’ Cup meeting.

One of the seven horses set to make the trip to California with his trainer, the grey was considered by many as a real Breeders’ Cup Classic contender, but his trainer sees his new target as a better place to aim the horse.

O'Brien said: "We know what he can do on turf and this race gives us another option.

"He acted on the Polytrack in Dundalk and we weren't sure if the Classic would suit him as he has a lot of speed.

"It is a bit of a gamble as they jump and go fast and that might surprise him after winning over a longer trip last time.

"I hope he doesn't get back too far and if he doesn't then anything can happen.

"Johnny was happy with him on the surface at Dundalk, he didn't feel that the surface was a problem."

A total of 21 horses are set to do battle in the Dirt Mile with Godolphin set to launch a double assault on the race, with Pyro and Midshipman, second and third favourites for the race in most places.

Crisford added: "Pyro is an interesting horse and won a Grade One on dirt at Saratoga last time.

"Whether or not he acts on this surface we will find out closer to the race, but he is a more a dirt type than a synthetic type so the surface is a slight concern.

"Midshipman had a setback but has been going well since and is a top-notch horse.

"He is going into the race in a forward manner and we are looking for a good run from him.”

Mastercraftsman is a best-priced 7/2 with Ladbrokes to taste Classic glory and the firm are also offering a free bet on the race for new customers, for all the information click here.
