2.00 Maiden Stakes 1m
With no form to go on - all but one of the 11 runners are unraced - the market should provide the best clues here, but one that should go well is PROTARAS. This impeccably bred colt is trained by Henry Cecil, whose record with juveniles at Newmarket is exceptional, registering a 35% strike rate during the past five seasons. His Twice Over made a winning start to his career in this race two years ago and if Protaras is half as good...

2.35 Maiden Stakes 6f
This looks a good opportunity for LOCKSLEY HALL to get off the mark after two near misses. The Newbury maiden he finished runner-up in last time was a hot race, and the winner Pastoral Player is a bit special, while there was a lot to like about his debut on the all-weather. There won't be much to like about his price here - forecast odds-on - but a winner's a winner.

3.10 Noel Murless Stakes 1m6f
Cecil has an even better chance in this Listed contest with MANIFEST (11/10 Paddy Power), who at one stage was being considered for the St Leger, before connections decided to take a more cautious approach and aim him at this instead. An easier winner of a maiden you will not see - he dotted up by an astonishing 19 lengths - and it will be disappointing to see him beaten here, although fast ground tempers enthusiasm for a chunky bet.

3.45 Somerville Tattersall Stakes 7f
This is tricky to call with Mata Keranjang, Khattaab and NIDEEB (7/2 Blue Square) all holding strong claims. Slight preference is for the latter who has already won at this level and is trained by the in-form Clive Brittain. Last time out at Haydock, he found 1m on soft ground too much of a stamina test, but still finished second to the useful Emerald Commander. Dropping back to 7f here and on a faster surface, he can get back to winning ways.

4.20 Rous Stakes 5f
Godolphin's Dandy Man is bet365's 7/2 joint-favourite (with Noble Storm), but I'm keen to take him on. The race he won at Leicester last time (his first in two years) was an egg and spoon affair and he invariably finds one (or two) too good in this company, so lay him on Betfair. Noble Storm should go well, but my idea of the winner is the David Nicholls-trained INXILE (5/1 Paddy Power), who has the form to go close.

4.55 Fillies' Handicap 6f
I really don't like the look of this race as a betting medium so the hat-trick seeking BOUNTY BOX is only a token selection.

5.30 Handicap 1m
This is not much better so let's just hope we've had a winner or two by this stage. None of the field are at the top of their game, but DINGAAN (12/1 bet365) has been running well since scoring at Bath in July and is running off only a 3lb higher mark here. He could be a much needed winner for jockey David Probert, who is battling Freddie Tylicki for the apprentice title.
