After widely being written off and with calls for the legendary chaser’s retirement ringing loudly in the ears of Paul Nicholls, Kauto Star and his masterful trainer proved all their doubters wrong with a spellbinding victory in the Betfair Chase at Haydock in November.

The nation’s favourite chaser registered a remarkable fifteenth Grade One victory in what will surely be remembered as one of the greatest days in Nicholls’ distinguished career and Kauto Star proved that he retains all the hunger and natural ability for racing at the highest level.

As they were swept away by the delirious celebrations on Merseyside, Nicholls and owner Clive Smith appeared to be favouring the idea of aiming Kauto towards an incredible fifth success in the King George at Kempton, before one last bid for a third Gold Cup at Cheltenham and the bookmakers were ducking for cover as soon as they crossed the line at Haydock.

A rematch with Long Run now appears to be on the cards in what should be an absolutely pulsating King George VI Chase at Kempton on Boxing Day.  Long Run remains the 13/8 favourite but Kauto Star is now 5/1 second in the betting – the same price as hugely talented stablemate Master Minded.

If Kauto Star does reign supreme and serve up a real Christmas cracker for his followers at Kempton then the winner’s enclosure would explode and it really would be one of the greatest achievements in the sport’s history.
