This year's King George will almost certainly have a missing superstar with Kauto Star’s retirement seemingly imminent, but it will still feature the cream on National Hunt racing and will be as fiercely contested as ever.

Nicky Henderson holds the strongest hand in the Boxing Day contest, with no less than five realistic contenders.

These are headed by Long Run, Boylesports 4-1 favourite, and the winner in 2010. he will be bidding to bounce back and prove himself a true champion here after being beaten in three of his four outings last season.

He is still only a seven-year-old so time is on his side, but he still has something to prove if he is to remain clear of his contemporaries.

His stablemate Finian's Rainbow took the Champion Chase at Cheltenham this year over two miles, and this sharp three miles has often proved well suited to horses with form over shorter.

James Nesbitt's Riverside Theatre won the Ryanair Chase over two and a half miles  at the festival in March in a thrilling finish, and will no doubt be a tough nut to crack if he turns up at Kempton.

The young pretender for Henderson is Bob's Worth, winner of the Royal and Sun Alliance Chase at Cheltenham but only third in the Feltham Novices over course and distance last year. He is a horse that keeps grinding and similar remarks apply to Burton Port who put in several high class efforts last year without getting his head in front.

The opposition to the Henderson battalion is headed by Grands Crus, David Pipe's dashing grey who disappointed at Cheltenham but had earlier proved his worth over this track when winning that Feltham Novices Chase in a time quicker than Kauto Star managed in the big one.

Second that day was Paul Nicholls's Silviniaco Conti who looks suited to the King George test and who his trainer will be hoping is up to the task of replacing his retired superstars.

Nicholls' other contender would appear to be Al Ferof who put in some good early-season efforts last year before disappointing in his last two runs. He is a horse that Ruby Walsh has always insisted would be better over further and this race looks the ideal first big test of his three-mile credentials.

Hunt Ball was a sensation last year when he shot up in the weights and won seven times during the season. His owner Anthony Knott has stressed that the King George is definitely on his agenda this year.

Last year's third Captain Chris has always been a quirky but talented horse, while Gold Cup second The Giant Bolster is another who could be suited by the Kempton test.

With the likes of Somersby, Time For Rupert and Diamond Harry always likely to put up a bold showing, Kempton's Boxing Day feature looks set to be a great contest.
