King George Chase betting tips

NEWBURY, ENGLAND - NOVEMBER 25: Barry Geraghty riding Bobs Worth (L) challenge on the run in to beat Cue Card and Joe Tizzard to win The Fuller's London Pride Novices' Steeple Chase at Newbury racecourse on November 25, 2011 in Newbury, England. (Photo by Alan Crowhurst/Getty Images)

With this year's King George Chase looking a wide open renewal, after the retirement of Kauto Star and the subsequent reversals of fortune for some of the established names, it may be worth having a look at last season's novices for punting inspiration.

The way that Hunt Ball was able to so easily bridge the gap to Grade One company at Aintree, added to the fact of Synchronised and the Giant Bolster filling the first two places in the Cheltenham Gold Cup, could well indicate that the older staying chasers are vulnerable to a new crop.

The Feltham Chase at Kempton's King George meeting last December threw up what was undoubtedly a top class 1-2-3 in Grands Crus, Silviniaco Conti and Bob's Worth and all will have their supporters for the main event this time.

David Pipe's Grands Crus looks best of the trio again and is certainly worthy of his place in the market at 6-1 with Stan James and William Hill.

Bob's Worth however is a less convincing performer around here at a similar price, even though he readily accounted for the grey at Cheltenham.

Grands Crus did not seem to get home at Cheltenham but he had far too much speed for Nicky Henderson's RSA winner in the Feltham and will be hard to beat round here.

Silviniaco Conti, second that day, is entitled to respect and is maybe a tad overpriced at 14-1 with Betvictor for the Boxing Day showpiece, but trainer Paul Nicholls always seems surprised by his good performances and seems to rate Al Ferof a much better prospect.

That one is available at 16-1 with Paddypower after a couple of below par performances and if he comes back to form for the step up in trip he may be worth an interest in the hands of the master of Ditcheat.

But one horse who finished in front of Al Ferof at Cheltenham, who barely runs a bad race in top company, and who has the potential to stay this trip, is available at far bigger odds .

Colin Tizzard's former Cheltenham bumper winner Cue Card can be backed at 25-1 with Betvictor and Stan James and is available at 33-1 on Betfair.

There is no doubt that Sprinter Sacre was the outstanding novice chaser on last season and Cue Card got closest to him last year at Cheltenham while Al Ferof laboured in behind. That was a tremendous performance at two miles as there is no doubt Cue Card will be better over a longer trip.

He has already shown good form at two and a half miles when easily accounting for Silviniaco Conti at Chepstow and just getting worried out of it by Bob's Worth at Newbury when giving that one seven pounds.

Admittedly that was Bob's Worth's first run of the year but with Cue Card having already shown form which ties him in very closely with some of those at the top of the betting, he has done nothing to justify being priced up at such dismissive odds.

Selection: Cue Card 33-1 with Betfair
