Steeplechasing legend Kauto Star has been crowned the highest-rated jumps horse in training for the fourth time in the last six seasons.

A figure of 180 achieved in beating Long Run (178) in the William Hill King George VI Chase meant he regained the crown from the Kempton Park runner-up.

Kauto Star has now been a champion on a remarkable seven occasions as he was the top two-and-a-half mile chaser in 2006-07 and 2007-08, as well as being the top two-mile chaser in 2006-07 when he became the only horse to be champion at all three chasing distances.

Paul Nicholls’ veteran, who was winning the King George for a record fifth time, is 14/1 with Stan James to make it an incredible six-timer on Boxing Day if connections decide to continue racing him.

Phil Smith, Head of Handicapping for the British Horseracing Authority, said: “Kauto Star's return to the pinnacle of jump racing is a truly remarkable story.

“At this time last year we were speculating whether Long Run's assent to the top of the ratings was the mark of a shift in the balance of power from the old guard to the young pretenders.

“Kauto had other ideas though. His Betfair Chase and William Hill King George VI Chase victories will live long in the memory and stand out as highlights of yet another vintage year.”

Long Run is 10lbs clear of the rest of his contemporaries in the three mile-plus chase division, with ill-fated Gold Cup winner Synchronised and Grand National hero Neptune Collonges both rated 168.

Master Minded (174) has been named champion in the two-and-a-half mile chase division for the second consecutive season by virtue of his win in the Amlin 1965 Chase at Ascot.

Sizing Europe (172) was not quite at his brilliant best this season and as a result lost his two-mile champion status to Finian's Rainbow (173) after a titanic struggle up the Cheltenham hill in March.

For the fourth consecutive year, Big Buck's (174) is the best hurdler at any distance in Britain and Ireland.

It is perhaps surprising given how many times he has run but the handicappers are still unsure about how good he really is, as all of his wins come so easily with the opposition quickly brushed aside at the business end of the race.

The two-mile hurdle championship is shared by Rock On Ruby (170) and Hurricane Fly (170). The former was the beneficiary of a brilliant ride by Noel Fehily in the Champion Hurdle, while Hurricane Fly gets his rating from the BHP Insurance Irish Champion Hurdle at Leopardstown.

Grumeti (153) is the first juvenile since Katchit (159 in 2006-07) to be top two-mile novice hurdler.
