Aidan O’Brien successfully unleashed another one of his juveniles on the Group 1 Criterium International at Saint-Cloud on Sunday, with apparent stable second string Jan Vermeer emphatically making every yard for an impressive victory in France.

Johnny Murtagh chose to ride Midas Touch, but it was Colm O’Donoghue who took the plaudits on the winner and it was a good looking field in behind, with the unbeaten Rosanara looking for more success at the highest level.

It means that O’Brien can add the victory to having the winner of the Dewhurst with Beethoven and the Racing Post Trophy with St Nicholas Abbey and Ladbrokes responded by making Van Vermeer their second favourite for the Epsom Derby, installing him at 10/1.

Spokesman David Williams said: "Jan Vermeer's win in France certainly wasn't in the script, but such was the authority of his victory he's well worthy of a Derby quote.

"He put a smart looking field to the sword."

Meanwhile, Derby favourite St Nicholas Abbey was cut in the betting again, into 2/1 (from 5/2) for Epsom. Ladbrokes go 25/1 bar the front Ballydoyle pair in the Classic market

David Williams of Ladbrokes said: "The Ballydoyle stranglehold on Epsom now looks almost complete. With the exception of St Nicholas Abbey and Jan Vermeer there's very little in the race to get excited about."
