Hillview can be the Boy in Saturday's Old Newton Cup

With the going currently soft, good-to-soft in places, and with rain between now and Saturday a near certainty it looks like yet another big summer flat handicap may turn into a slog.

With this in mind, and fresh from the stable’s triumph with Ile De Re in the Northumberland Plate, it is little wonder that yet another of Donald McCain’s dual-purpose performers has been heavily supported all week.

This time it is Lexi’s Boy, winner of the Cumberland Plate on his first flat outing for a year, whose price has contracted to a best-priced 7-2 with Bet365 and William Hill. The plunge is understandable but his price is now very skinny and reflects the form of his trainer as much as the horse’s chance.

With seventeen set to go to post there must be value to be had in the race and Allied Powers at a massive 33-1 with Stan James makes some appeal as he will love the soft ground, has a touch of class like previous winners Dangerous Midge and Mad Rush, and won a Group Three at Longchamp in May. If it turns up heavy at Haydock he will be one of the few to relish it.

But possibly a more secure each way proposition comes in the shape of the only horse older than Allied Powers in the field and that’s Hillview Boy. The Goldie/Lee combination almost took the Northumberland Plate last week with Dream Icon and Hillview Boy will similarly enjoy plenty of give underfoot and is available at 14-1 with Bet365, Paddypower and Stan James

He may be eight but he has only had 22 starts and has been placed in 12 of those. Last time out he never got to the first two but that’s unsurprising given it was over a mile. Goldie’s charge has been second in a November Handicap over one and a half miles in soft ground, and started off his career with a win and a second in bumpers at Ayr so he certainly has the required stamina.

For Hilllview Boy to run so well over a mile last time marks him out as having plenty of life left in him yet, and his second behind Ithoughtitwasover of Mark Johnston, who has proved himself off much higher marks since, over 12 furlongs on his previous outing was another good performance.

Add in the fact that Graham Lee, who is riding out of his skin since changing codes, has had two sighters on the horse, and the decision to step Hillview Boy back up in trip could prove to be a winning one.
