Friday's racing tips - 7/1 Farlow can win Ascot highlight

Friday’s big race at Ascot is the Cushman & Wakefield Handicap (for the John Travers Memorial Trophy) over six furlongs at 15:55 BST in which Farlow looks a great value bet to take the honours.

The field is down to nine because of two non-runners and yet the progressive Ralph Beckett-trained four-year-old can still be backed at 7/1 with Stan James.

This makes him a terrific each-way option because Farlow is the only one of these who has won on today’s good-to-soft surface.

Moreover, the gelding is undoubtedly in better form than his rivals having gained a victory and a second place in his three starts this season.

The win, which was the fourth of his career in only 11 outings – an excellent strike-rate – came at Doncaster in May when he edged home ahead of 19 rivals with half a length to spare.

Since then he stepped up to seven furlongs at Haydock and could not quite catch Tamareen – a run which, although creditable, clearly indicated to trainer Beckett that Farlow is probably better over sprint distances.

Thus Jim Crowley's mount is back down to six furlongs today on an easy surface and those conditions should enable him to thrive.

Racing off a mark of 90, Farlow is only 4lb higher than when scoring at Doncaster and his rate of improvement suggests he should be able to cope with the weight of 9st 2lb he has been allotted.

It is a competitive race, however, and several horses have been well backed against Farlow.

They include the favourite Mac’s Power, who has been running respectably in some of the top handicaps staged so far this season, but the six-year-old may not have as much scope to progress through the ranks as the selection.

There has also been money in places for top weight Lexi’s Hero but this four-year-old needs to step up on recent efforts.
