While the participation of Investec Derby favourite Carlton House has been under a cloud all week, Oaks favourite Blue Bunting has been preparing for her bid to complete a sensational Classic double for Godolphin, Mahmood Al Zarooni and jockey Frankie Dettori.

Last month’s 1000 Guineas winner powered to the head of the Oaks ante post betting after her victory at Newmarket and the filly looked to have too much speed for her rivals in a race run below her ideal distance.  Now she steps up to 1m4f, a trip she seem certain to relish judged on her pedigree and the 9/4 market leader looks like she will be a seriously tough nut to crack.

However, a chance is taken on HAVANT reversing the 1000 Guineas form with her rival and Sir Michael Stoute’s filly looks a decent bet to add another Classic victory to her legendary handler’s CV.

The daughter of Halling was sent straight to the 1000 Guineas on the back of a two-year-old career that saw her finish the season unbeaten after her victory in the Group Three So Sharp Stakes last October.  The subject of plenty of upbeat gallop reports over the winter, Havant returned to action with her trainer suggesting that his filly would improve markedly for the outing.

Sir Michael Stoute’s thoughts seemed to be echoed by Havant’s performance as she finished six lengths adrift from Blue Bunting, staying on at the end without ever looking like winning the race.  It seemed obvious that she would be suited by a step up in trip (her two victories as a juvenile came over 7f on softish ground) and believed to have the pace for a Guineas, but bred for middle distances, Havant clearly has plenty of ability.

It is no secret that Stoute’s horses were running below-par at the Guineas meeting and the selection can be expected to show vast improvement after her run at HQ.  She is a confident choice in a race that looks high on class and it should be a contest to savour on a beautiful day at Epsom.

The biggest danger to Havant could come in the shape of Aidan O’Brien’s team of raiders launching an assault on the race and last month’s Cheshire Oaks winner Wonder Of Wonders looks like she could be the pick of his four runners in Friday’s race.  That being said, recent Irish 1000 Guineas heroine Misty For Me would be dangerous to dismiss after the superstar bounced back to form at the Curragh two weeks ago.

Nick Wilby’s selection – Havant (13/2, Paddy Power)
