For the first time since 1976, the Derby went to France courtesy of the Andre Fabre-trained Pour Moi, who came with a strong run under Mickael Barzalona to deny Treasure Beach by a head with the Royal-owned favourite Carlton House a further three quarters of a length back in third.

In terms of future targets, Pour Moi will reportedly now be given a traditional French Arc preparation, with the Prix Niel his next port of call. Pour Moi is now the 5.5 favourite for the Arc, ahead of So You Think (6.8) and last year's winner Workforce (7.0).

Other interesting performances at Epsom on Saturday include that of Mark Johnston's two-year-old colt Fulbright, who now has the Coventry at Royal Ascot on his agenda after success in the listed Woodcote Stakes. In the five-furlong Dash, Captain Dunne put up a career-best performance to win under top weight, while the Group 3 Diomed Stakes went the way of the Marco Botti-trained Fanunalter.

There was plenty of good racing away from Epsom on Saturday, the best of it arguably taking place at Musselburgh where the most noteworthy performance was that of the David Brown-trained two-year-old colt Frederick Engels, who will be one to take seriously in either the Norfolk or the Windsor Castle at Royal Ascot after demolishing his rivals in the five-furlong minor event.

Sunday's best racing took place at Chantilly where the Group 1 Prix du Jockey-Club went the way of Alain de Royer-Dupre's Reliable Man. The John Gosden-trained Colombian fared the best of the British and Irish contingent in fourth, while both Roderic O'Connor and Casamento were below form in eighth and ninth respectively. Reliable Man is now the second most prominent French-trained horse in the Arc betting at 15.5 behind Baraan (14.5), who did very well to finish third in the Jockey-Club after forfeiting lots of ground with a slow start.
