Decision made on Zenyatta 2010 campaign

- 17 Dec 2009

2009 Breeders’ Cup-winning heroine Zenyatta will not race on in 2010.

Owners Jerry and Ann Moss were believed to be considering racing their homebred star at the beginning of the season before she was retired as a broodmare, however, her recent success at Santa Anita means that that is no longer the case.

She will make a superb breeding prospect in the new chapter of her career, but talking about the undefeated superstar before her Breeders’ Cup victory, trainer John Shirreffs had explained: "I think she'll continue to race until that decision is made.  She's doing so well. I hope that would be the case. She's just rounding into form now."

Zenyatta confirmed herself as one of the best of all time when she became the first mare to win the Breeders’ Cup Classic at Santa Anita this year.

It was an astonishing victory and with half a mile to run, the five-year-old was as much as 15 lengths off the pace.  She soon swept down the outside, collaring Gio Ponti and Twice Over late on.

It was a performance that captured the imagination of a nation and she will go down in history as one of the great Breeders' Cup Classic winners.
