Chester Cup winner heads Northumberland Plate declarations

With an inspection now scheduled for 8am tomorrow, fingers are crossed that the feature of Newcastle's flat season, the Northumberland Plate, gets the go-ahead with 20 runners set to face the starter.

With prevailing conditions adding to what is already a stern stamina test over two miles it is little wonder that those with proven form over extreme distances are at the head of the market.

The favourite is this year's Chester Cup winner Ile De Re trained by Donald McCain. McCain has won the race already in his short career with the Chester runner-up Overturn and feels his charge has an obvious chance here:

"Obviously I hadn't had him long before Chester. It was about three weeks and he came in great nick from Ian Williams. Since Chester this has been the target. Everything has gone smoothly."

"The ground is going to be in his favour, I don't see why the track shouldn't suit and we're hoping for a big run. Overturn got the run of the race at Chester and everything went to plan apart from the ground and this horse still managed to beat him."

Jockey Silvestre de Sousa is expecting a big run from the Mark Johnston-trained Gulf Of Naples, who he steered into fourth place behind his former stablemate Colour Vision in the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot.

Ile De Re is shading favouritism at 5-1 with Ladbrokes while the Magic Sign's second in the market is Mark Johnston's Gold Cup fourth Gulf of Naples at 7-1.

His rider there and again tomorrow, Silvestre De Sousa, is hopeful we will see an even better performance from the four year old this time: "There's a bit more to come from him and he's going to win a big race, I hope, this year. He's a nice horse and has been improving all year. The Gold Cup was a big race, he ran a blinder but he did not have a hard time out there."

"They went a nice even gallop, then we quickened up and he finished the race nicely and quickened all the way to the line. I think he goes there with a good chance. He goes on any kind of ground. To me he'll win a Group race this year."

Sir Mark Prescott’s Motivado will have his stamina tested in this contest under Luke Morris, as it is not only his first run of the year but also his first start at two miles. However, the son of Motivator does have experience of Newcastle as it was where he began his racing career.

Mick Channon's Montaff is bidding to go one better than last year when only Tominator got the better of him and he is able to run here off 11lb less having had an uninspiring season to date.  Alan King's The Betchworth Kid and Tim Easterby's useful Queen Mother's Cup winner Crackentorp are among many interesting contenders in what, weather-permitting, promises to be a tremendous contest.
