Overturn will carry top weight as he bids to win the StanJames.com Chester Cup for the second consecutive year.

Donald McCain’s gelding made all around the tight Roodeye track in 2011 to score by a length and three quarters from Tastahil and is 5/1 joint favourite with Stan James to repeat that success.

The eight-year-old arrives at Chester after another successful hurdling campaign capped by an excellent effort when second in the Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham on his latest start.

Last year’s winning jockey Eddie Ahern again teams up with Overturn, who heads a field of 17 and will start from stall eight.

McCain also runs Ile De Re, a 25/1 chance who is having his first outing for the Cheshire handler since joining him from Ian Williams.

The other 5/1 joint favourite is Cesarewitch hero Never Can Tell who, like he was at Newmarket in the second leg of the Autumn Double, will be ridden by Frankie Dettori for trainer Jamie Osborne.

Never Can Tell is one of four runners who will run in the colours of Dr Marwan Koukash, who always targets the big Chester prizes.

The five-year-old is suitably drawn in stall six, but the same cannot be said of Mark Johnston-trained Gulf of Naples who has drifted to 7/1 after being drawn on the wide outside of the field.

Aidan O’Brien, fresh from his Guineas double at the weekend, has declared Harrison’s Cave rather than Apache and the mount of Ryan Moore is a 12/1 chance.
