Betfair Denman Hurdle betting tips - Long Run can blow away Newbury field

Long Run has been disappointing so far this season but last year's Gold Cup winner can lay down a marker for Cheltenham 2012 by winning the Betfair Denman Hurdle in style on Friday.

Long Run was undoubtedly the star of last year's jumps season with Nicky Henderson's charge winning both the King George VI Chase at Kempton and then following up with a stunning Cheltenham Gold Cup victory, in which he blew away previous winners Imperial Commander, Kauto Star and Denman.

It is, therefore, fitting that the 7-year-old is favourite for this year's Betfair Denman Hurdle, which seeks to honour the great horse, who retired after finishing second in last year's Gold Cup. Paddy Power are currently offering a best price of 1/2 that Long Run wins at Newbury on Friday and there is little doubt that he will land the odds.

Jockey Sam Waley Cohen is, however, taking nothing for granted ahead of the rescheduled race and claims that respect has to be given to the rest of the field.

"It's always really exciting riding Long Run and it's going to be a good, competitive race," said the amateur jockey.

"You always want to win these races, but it isn't going to be easy. A horse like What A Friend was only just fourth in the Gold Cup last year and we have to give him a significant amount of weight, so you have to take that into consideration. It's a warm race in it's own right and an important prep on the road to Cheltenham. The run should set him up perfectly for the Gold Cup."

What A Friend, who can be backed at 6/1 at SportingBet to cause an upset at Newbury, is on 10lbs better terms with Long Run than he was when finishing behind at Cheltenham last year but even that is unlikely to be able to see Paul Nicholls's runner reverse the placings. Tidal Bay (10/1, Boylesports) is the Nicholls's other entry in the Betfair Denman Hurdle, and the presence of Ruby Walsh in the saddle is a plus, but he disappointed in the Argento Chase last time out and, at 11 years old, is arguably best left alone.

Burton Port (9/1, Paddy Power) could well be Long Run's biggest challenge on Friday and Nicky Henderson will be keen to fill both of the places at Newbury. The 2010 Hennessy runner-up is likely to throw down the challenge to his stablemate but one would imagine that will simply spur last year's Gold Cup winner on and it could well be just the workout Long Run needs before he heads to Cheltenham in three weeks time.

Long Run has finished second best to Kauto Star in each of his two starts this season but one would argue that he wasn't fully fit in either. Newbury will be the litmus test for the horse that is 2/1 at bet365 to win the 2012 Cheltenham Gold Cup and if he passes that then expect to see those odds half. Our advice is to get on before that happens.

Recommendation

Betfair Denman Hurdle - Long Run (1/2, Paddy Power)
Cheltenham Gold Cup - Long Run (2/1, bet365)
