Bell happy with Art Con ahead of Nunthorpe

Michael Bell is not worried about dropping Art Connoisseur down to the minimum trip at York on Friday. (credit: riffraff1)

Michael Bell will saddle his dual-Oaks winning filly Sariska at York on Thursday, but he has far from forgotten his Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes livewire, Art Connoisseur.

The trainer believes that a return to five furlongs will be no trouble for the Golden Jubilee Stakes winner.  That victory at the Royal meeting came after last year’s Coventry Stakes winner had been running below the standard his trainer knows he can, something he also did in the Darley July Cup last time out.

Hayley Turner will take the ride and Michael Bell said:  "I've been happy with the horse, he had a canter on Wednesday morning and looks happy and well - he's in great nick.

"I think the track will suit him, it's really a question of whether he is as effective over six (furlongs) as five.

"I think he will be, as by the furlong marker in the Golden Jubilee he was in front. I'm not too worried about the drop back in trip and I'm looking forward to the race," he told At The Races.

One who will enter the race proven over the minimum distance is Sean Tarry's South African challenger Mythical Flight.

He was, however, only 11th behind Scenic Blast in the King's Stand Stakes.

"He's enjoyed a very good prep compared to what he had for the King's Stand Stakes at Ascot when, as you will recall, he had a bruised foot and was out of work for a while," said Tarry.

"He had a good piece of fast work (on Tuesday) - his last before the Nunthorpe - and all went really well."

Art Connoisseur is a best-priced 14/1 with Bet365, while Mythical Flight is available at 66/1 to win the race (William Hill).
