Ante-post betting on the Boylesport Gold Cup

Pete Culshaw - 12 Dec 2007

Ante-post action for the two big races at Cheltenham on Saturday hotted up today with significant gambles on Afsoun in the International Hurdle, and New Little Bric in the Gold Cup.

Having been 5/1 about Afsoun yesterday, the Nicky Henderson trained five-year-old was first trimmed to 9/2 and then cut to 4/1 by Blue Square in the face of sustained support. Defending Champion Hurdler Sublimity has proved friendless, drifting from 2/1 to 9/4. Outsiders supported include Penzance (33/1 from 50/1) and the enigmatic Desert Quest (12/1 from 14/1)

In the boylesports.com Gold Cup, the Paul Nicholls fan club were in evidence as they backed New Little Bric into 4/1 (from 5/1) for the main event on Saturday. Others backed in an active market were Cheltenham specialist Palarshan (8/1 from 9/1) and Faasel (14/1 from 16/1).

Kate Miller, Blue Square’s PR, said: "The way the markets are shaping up for the weekend it seems that punters are treating this opportunity as a great chance to pay for some Christmas presents.

"The support for Afsoun is interesting as it flys in the face of the current lack of form being shown by Nicky Henderson’s horses. The interest in New Little Bric was more predictable as Paul Nicholls has farmed the main chase prizes for the last month."
