The Group One Sussex Stakes at Glorious Goodwood on Wednesday August the 1st is the midsummer mile championship, and the first chance for the three-year-olds to test their mettle against the older performers.

Frankel announced himself as something out of the ordinary in this race last year when he ran away from Canford Cliffs to record a five length success. Since then Sir Henry Cecil's champion has gone from strength-to-strength culminating in an eleven-length success at Royal Ascot in June.

This year's contest is sure to be a highlight thanks to the presence of the world's greatest racehorse, and the list of possible opponents has today been increased as Godolphin have indicated that twice Group One-placed Farhh is going to lay down a challenge.

The lightly-raced colt has really blossomed this year and has been an unlucky third in the Prince of Wales's Stakes and a close second in the Eclipse on his last two outings.

Godolphin racing manager Simon Crisford said: "Because of the timing of the Sussex, we thought we'd take our chance. He's in good form and as long as the ground is decent, we'll run. It's a sporting decision by Sheikh Mohammed."

Apart from Farhh the strongest opposition to Frankel could be provided by trainer Aidan O'Brien, who has seven entries including Excelebration, who has finished second to Frankel on four occasions.

Other O’Brien entries are Irish 2,000 Guineas victor Power, Maybe who landed the Group One Moyglare Stud Stakes last season and Ishvana, who landed the Group Three Jersey Stakes at Royal Ascot.

Richard Fahey's Gabrial could turn out to be the strongest of the classic generation as he looked progressive in finishing fifth in the St James's Palace Stakes, one place ahead of Bryan Smart's Foxtrot Romeo who was runner-up in the Irish 2000 Guineas and who is also engaged.

Planteur, who won the Group One Prix Ganay in 2011, is another interesting contender while Richard Hannon's Strong Suit may attempt to get his season on track after being unsuited to the July Cup test.

With Farhh set to take his place in the line-up, Frankel will have at least one viable opponent, but from what we have seen so far from the mighty colt, it will be extraordinary if Frankel does not register another incredible performance.
