2012 Punchestown Festival: Ruby Walsh can make bookies Ceol over!

Ruby Walsh and Willie Mullins can team up to win the Boylesports.com Handicap Hurdle on day one of the Punchestown Festival with Ceol Rua.

This wide-open 25-runner event looks to be one of the few opportunities for punters on day one of the meeting to back a decent-priced winner and Walsh looks the man to side with.

Mullins’ mare has been in fine form this season, her first over timber, winning twice at Fairyhouse - a maiden hurdle and a Listed event.

She was off the track for two and a half months before returning on Easter Sunday with fifth place in a Grade 2 event for mares, not beaten far.

The ground on that occasion may have been a shade lively for Ceol Rua, who likes to get her toe in and should be much better suited by these conditions.

Sure to strip fitter for her run earlier this month, Ceol Rua is sure to enjoy plenty of support given her high-profile connections and should go close.

Davy Russell looks sure to enjoy a fine opening day of Punchestown as he rides two odds-on favourites and could also enjoy a good spin from Savello in the handicap hurdle.

Munsaab should go well for the James Motherway stable, while Jonjo O’Neill-trained Kandari, unlucky to be brought down at Fairyhouse last time out, could be best of the English raiders.

In the graded contests, it’s all about whether the hotpots live up to their star billing, but this meeting does tend to produce the odd upset.

Some each-way value could be available and in the Boylesports Champion Chase, 16/1 chance Realt Dubh looks a viable alternative to the Sizing Europe-Big Zeb axis.

Noel Meade’s gelding was having his first start for 10 months when well behind that duo at Cheltenham and should be able to do himself more justice this time on going that will suit him.
