2012 Irish Derby preview - Camelot bids to put Aidan in seventh heaven

Saturday's Irish Derby patrons will expect to see a familiar face in the winner's enclosure, and whether it's long odds-on Camelot, or Astrology or Imperial Monarch that prevail, Aidan O'Brien is expected to be saddling his seventh winner in succession in Ireland's premier contest for three-year-olds.

Possibly the biggest danger to his dual English Classic-winning star, currently 1-3 with Betfred, is the Curragh going as O'Brien explained: "There is a concern that the ground won't be ideal for Camelot. He did win the 2000 Guineas on slow ground but it was fast when he won at Epsom. The more it dries out the better it will be for him.

Imperial Monarch, widely considered to have been unlucky-in-running in the French Derby, has been supported in recent days into a best-priced 13-2 clear second favourite. There has however been a minor setback in the colt's preparation.

"When we were shoeing Imperial Monarch this morning there was a slight pulse in one of his feet. Hopefully it won't develop into anything." O'Brien said.

The third representative of the Coolmore juggernaut is Astrology, winner of the Dee Stake and third in the Epsom Derby, who is on a retrieval mission after a disappointing fourth of five at Royal Ascot last week.

O'Brien feels that his colts have some serious opposition tomorrow and outlined the dangers: "I think John Oxx's two (Born To Sea and Akeed Mofeed), Jim Bolger's (Light Heavy) and Dermot (Weld, Speaking Of Which) has one, they are all legitimate horses who deserve to be in it and it's as competitive as always."

John Oxx runs two in his quest to recapture a race that he last won in 2003 with Alamshar. Stable number one Johnny Murtagh has chosen Sea The Stars half-brother Born To Sea and Oxx feels that the step up in trip will suit him. "He's come out of Ascot (fourth in the St James's Palace stakes), very well and it's a big step up in distance but we think it's worth trying."

William Buick was confirmed for Akeed Mofeed earlier in the week as he has his long-awaited seasonal debut and the jockey wasn't hiding his enthusiasm: "It's fantastic to get such a good ride in the Irish Derby. I'm really looking forward to it. He was high-profile horse last season and it's fantastic to ride for Mr Oxx - I'm really looking forward to it."

Dermot Weld has entered his Gallinule Stakes-winning Speaking Of Which who impressed in taking that race by nine lengths last month, while Light Heavy, who has not run since taking the Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial in mid-May, will try to win a race that Jim Bolger has not won since St Jovite beat the colts in 1992.
