Camelot will start the red-hot favourite for the 2012 Epsom Derby as he faces the smallest field for the Blue Riband since 1907.

Aidan O’Brien’s colt faces only eight rivals in bidding to complete a Classic double having landed the 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket last month.

O’Brien, who is seeking to win the Derby for the third time and first since 2002, will give the leg up on unbeaten Camelot to his son Joseph.

The Ballydoyle handler also has a second string to his bow in Astrology, the mount of former champion jockey Ryan Moore.

Second favourite at 5/1 is Bonfire, who aims to give the Highclere Throughbred Syndicate another Derby victory following Motivator’s triumph in 2005.

Andrew Balding, who also runs 100/1 rank outsider Minimise Risk, trains Bonfire who won the traditional key Derby trial, the Dante Stakes at York.

Hayley Turner will become only the second female jockey to ride in the Epsom Derby when she partners Cavaleiro for trainer Marcus Tregoning, who saddled Sir Percy to win the famous race in 2006.
