This year's Durban July is all about Jackson, who has been the talk of South African horseracing for months.

He's the champion three-year-old and many experts rank him a potential superstar. A big horse with a huge stride, Jackson has won five of seven starts and established his superiority over his contemporaries with a fluent win the 2000m Cape Derby back in January.

He's run only twice since, finding 1600m too short when second to Variety Club in the SA Guineas in May and then putting up a flawless dress rehearsal with a comfortable success in the Daily News 2000 over the Greyville 2000m a month ago.

He is carrying 2kg less than should be the case on merit ratings because of a race condition that caps the maximum weight for three-year- olds at 57kg. That's effectively a two-length bonus and stacks the odds in his favour, plus it's likely that we have not yet seen the best of this son of 2003 July winner Dynasty.

On paper it's all over bar the shouting but racing is never that simple and there's much for Jackson's army of fans to worry about. There's enormous pressure on trainer Brett Crawford and relatively inexperienced jockey Karis Teetan, and, to make it worse, Jackson is drawn wide in No 16 stall.

Wide draws are not fatal in the July as past winners like Flaming Rock and Dynasty showed, but Teetan is going to have keep his cool at all points of the race, especially early on as he aims find Jackson a sweet spot. If he does Jackson should only have to run to form to win.

If Jackson fluffs his lines, any one of a dozen horses could win. Champion trainer Mike de Kock is a master at preparing horses for a big day and he will saddle four runners in his quest for his fifth July success in 11 years.

Ilha Bela is being widely tipped as the pick of his four, but stablemate Vettel got close enough to Jackson in the Daily News 2000 to suggest he's not without hope and neither are the stable's other runners Solo Traveller and Gorongosa.

Mike Bass is another trainer to respect in big races and he's got three runners headed by English Garden, but the best longshot at the current odds may be last year's Dingaans runner-up Whiteline Fever.
