Camelot is the hot favourite to win the 2012 Investec Derby but a big run in the York Dante Stake could see Bonfire's odds slashed.
The Qipco 2,000 Guineas winner, Camelot, is evens favourite wih
Coral for next month’s Investec Derby, after the Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial at Leopardstown failed to produce a strong challenger to the market leader. Bonfire and Madaean are next in the betting at 10-1 and 14-1 respectively, and both could bid to enhance their Epsom credentials in York’s Dante Stakes this week.
Coral’s David Stevens told Bettingpro:
“Camelot has been the worst result in our Derby book since his runaway Racing Post Trophy win last October, and after the trials at Chester, Lingfield and Leopardstown, we have seen nothing so far to give us hope of getting the favourite beat at Epsom next month,”
“We’ll be hoping the Dante, an excellent guide to the Derby in recent years, produces a genuine challenger to Camelot this week, with Bonfire and Mandaean the most likely challengers to the unbeaten Ballydoyle star,” added Stevens.
“By contrast the Investec Oaks looks wide open, with Vow stating her claim in good style at Lingfield on Saturday, and with the Aidan O’Brien team for the fillies’ Classic yet to be finalised, William Haggas’ charge could even start favourite next month,” reckoned Stevens.
