This year's 2000 Guineas has finally arrived and after months of hype surrounding Henry Cecil’s unbeaten colt Frankel, the superstar finally has the chance to prove he is one of the best we’ve ever seen when he heads to Newmarket on Saturday.

Frankel captured the imagination of racing fans as a juvenile and after signing off with a power-packed display in the Dewhurst Stakes last season, he returned with a similarly impressive success in the Greenham Stakes at Newbury two weeks ago and there looks to be very few chinks in his armour.

Just one favourite has won the race since 1993 and layers of the horse will be keen to stress he will have to be every bit as good as people believe if he is to win from stall one.  Punters keen to take the star on will also point to his tendency to race with the choke out, but in all likelihood, he looks like he can join an illustrious list of winners of the race and add the first Classic of the season to his impressive CV.

Plenty of trainers and jockeys have already suggested that they are playing for second place in the race and luckily for punters that don’t fancy backing Frankel at 4/7 (William Hill), most of the bookies are running a market without the market leader.

It is another unbeaten colt that can strike (most probably behind Frankel) and the 11/4 (Sky Bet) on Pathfork winning without Frankel looks to be a decent bet.

Jessica Harrington, best known for her handling of horses over the larger obstacles, will be hoping that her National Stakes hero can give Frankel a serious race on Saturday and he looks well capable of chasing home Henry Cecil’s favourite.

Last seen beating Casamento in the National Stakes at the Curragh in September, Pathfork’s class seemed to get him through a race that saw him race without cover on ground far softer than ideal.  Casamento subsequently went on to win the Racing Post Trophy at Doncaster and the form looks solid.

A decent turn of pace (showed in the Futurity Stakes on his second start) will serve him well on the Rowley Mile and he could push Frankel all the way in a race to savour.

Selection – Pathfork w/o Frankel (11/4, Sky Bet)
