Alex Salmond was sworn in as First Minister on Wednesday and Independence is high on the SNP leader's agenda

The returning First Minister has pledged to hold a referendum on Scottish Independence during this parliamentary term and it is 5/2 with Scottish bookmaker McBookie that the country votes to break away from the Union.

A 'No' vote still looks more likely and is a 2/7 shot with the firm although Salmond can be a persuasive man and his landslide victory in the recent elections showed that there is a lot of support for the SNP. The recent recession and Salmond's comments on both the Iraq war and military budget appear to have struck a chord with Scots voters and the 'Yes' campaign may become more popular as the referendum nears.

It is 4/1 that the referendum is held before 2014, 5/1 that the vote takes place in 2015, 5/1 for a 2016 vote and 11/14 that there is no ballot until after 2020.
