The Next Irish President betting at Paddy Power has Michael D Higgins as favourite, although Gay Byrne has been the subject of several bets

Paddy Power today slashed the odds on Gay Byrne becoming the next President of Ireland from 66/1 to just 6/1 following a massive gamble on the veteran broadcaster.

The move came following the results of recent polls which showed the road safety chief ahead of all declared candidates running for the Aras, and a fresh statement from Gay himself that he would have to consider running if the public wanted him to.

Sharon McHugh, spokesperson for Paddy Power told Bettingpro: “Looking at the betting we’ve seen in the last 24 hours it looks like the public are shouting loud and clear. They want Gay in the Aras!”

However, with Gay yet to officially announce his intentions to run Paddy Power still make Labour presidential candidate Michael D Higgins their 8/11 odds-on favourite to succeed President Mary McAleese. Gay Mitchell is 15/8 followed by Mary Davis at 9/2
