Next French President betting - Francois Hollande odds-on

Francois Hollande is a huge favourite to be France's next President

Nicolas Sarkozy's time as France's President looks set to be at an end with Francois Hollande odds-on to replace him.

France is widely expected to begin the process of electing a new President this weekend with betting suggesting Francois Hollande already has one foot in the door of the Elysee Palace.

Bookie Paddy Power’s year long market on the French Presidency has seen the socialist Hollande emerge as a hot favourite to be the next leader with odds of just 1/8 he emerges victorious from the protracted system. Hollande is also the 8/13 favourite to win the first round of voting this Sunday.

With a strong ‘anyone but Sarkozy’ sentiment running through many of the opinion polls the current President is facing a huge battle to remain in power and is 9/2 to find a way of snatching an unexpected victory. A small bounce in late March had seen Sarkozy’s odds fall to 7/4 but this soon fell flat as Hallande reasserted his dominance.

Hollande is also the favourite to be the leader after the first round of voting on Sunday at 8/13 with Sarkozy, who must get a good result at the first hurdle to be in the running, just 6/5. Right wing extremist Marine Le Pen, who at one point threatened to put the cat amongst the pigeons in the first voting round, has fallen behind her rivals at 33/1 having been as short as 12/1 to take Sunday’s first round vote.

Paddy Power are also betting on what football punters might call the ‘half-time, full-time betting’ with odds on the double of the first round winner and the overall winner. Hollande is the favourite to win at both stages of the race at 8/13 whilst its 2/1 for Sarkozy to edge the first round but be pipped at the post by Hollande as the traditionally left leaning country lurches away from “the rich people’s President” and into the arms of Hollande when the fallen candidates voters are up for grabs.

Darren Haines, spokesman for Paddy Power, told Bettingpro:

“If Hollande wins the first round it will be almost impossible for Sarkozy to win via the run off. Punters are picking up on that.”
