Coalition opens $1.35 to win again!
Former union heavyweight and Blacktown MP John Robertson has opened $1.35 favourite at
Centrebet to lead the Labor Opposition into the next NSW State election, but new Premier Barry O’Farrell will “feel the footsteps” of Treasurer-elect Mike Baird, according to leading political bookmaker Centrebet’s markets released today.
Media chief and analyst Neil Evans said while the Coalition had opened $1.35 favourite to win again in 2015, with Labor a $3.10 outsider, Mr O’Farrell was much longer at $1.60 to still be in charge, with Mr Baird a big rival at $2.35.
“If the black financial holes in NSW run very deep, and the Liberals’ charter becomes a delicate financial balancing act, the push for Mr Baird to become the next leader will only grow,” Evans said. “His credentials are very sound and he’s the party’s new star-on-the-rise, so don’t be surprised over time if he is backed into favourite!”
The NSW Coalition’s future looks a two-horse race, with Nationals leader Andrew Stoner out at $9.00. Veteran North Shore MP and Health Minister-elect Jillian Skinner is $12.00, while Willoughby MP Gladys Berejiklian is further out at $16.00.
Evans said Labor’s drastic future looked clearer! “John Robertson is almost certain to become Opposition Leader, despite claims already of deep divisions within the shattered party. “Labor’s new power ‘breed’ will start their climb back exactly where they horrendously fell down – in Sydney’s western and south-western basins!” he said.
He said Michael Daley ($4.00), despite having support, only just scraped home in his eastern Sydney seat of Maroubra, while Deputy Leader Carmel Tebbutt ($6.25) is still in the market despite initially ruling out a leadership challenge! “The one spark I have identified from the Labor wreckage is Bankstown MP Tania Mihailuk who is priced at $12.00 and could well be a performer to watch,” Evans added.
Centrebet has the Coalition a $1.35 favourite to make it two straight terms in government.
