Gordon Brown is among the favourites to be appointed, although Christine Lagarde is in pole position

Gordon Brown has emerged as a surprise contender for the IMF leadership according to Ladbrokes.

The bookmaker report that Brown, previously friendless in the market has been slashed to 7/1 (from 20/1) on Monday morning as punters look to oppose odds-on Lagarde at 1/3.

Kemal Dervis is also popular at 4/1 and the firm predict continued money for Brown will see him emerge as the clear second favourite this week.

Alex Donohue of Ladbrokes said: "Brown weakness in the market has evaporated. He's the man for money this week in opposition to hot favourite Lagarde."
