Gay Byrne is now second favourite to become the next President of Ireland with Paddy Power, with punters only wanting to back one man

Paddy Power this evening slashed the odds further on Gay Byrne becoming the ninth President of Ireland to just 9/4 from 3/1 as bets continued to pour in for the veteran broadcaster.

It’s now almost impossible to believe that “Uncle Gaybo’s” odds were as big as 66/1 last Friday before the mammoth gamble emerged. The former Late Late Show king has yet to confirm whether or not he will run for the Aras but as it stands he’s already fast becoming the No.1 choice with punters.

Labour candidate Michael D Higgin’s lead appears to be slipping with Paddy Power now placing him just slightly ahead of Gay in the betting at 5/4. Meanwhile Gay Mitchell and Mary Davis have drifted right out to 3/1 and 7/1.

Sharon McHugh, spokesperson for Paddy Power told Bettingpro: “Considering Gay has yet to make his position clear the betting has really bowled us over. Today alone one punter placed €700 on Gay at 3/1. At this stage punters have definitely nailed their colours to the mast!”

Next Irish President
 5/4     Michael D.Higgins
 9/4     Gay Byrne
 3/1     Gay Mitchell
 7/1     Mary Davis
18/1     Brian Crowley
22/1     Dana Rosemary Scallon
25/1     Martin McAleese
25/1     Eamon O'Cuiv
25/1     Sean Gallagher
