William Hill punters are backing Nicolas Sarkozy to win the 2012 French Presidential election.

William Hill have twice cut their odds for Sarkozy to win, from 6/1 to 5/1 and again to 9/2, after a string of bets of up to £1095 on the incumbent to retain his position.

Hill’s spokesman Graham Sharpe told Bettingpro.com: “Sarkozy appears to be launching a late rally in the betting, having been friendless in the market ever since he was beaten in the opening round of the campaign.

“As the countdown to polling begins we have seen an interesting gamble develop for him and we’ve seen bets from customers in Ivory Coast, Monaco, Morrocco, Singapore and Switzerland together with a £1095 from a Surrey based client, forcing us to shorten his odds although he remains the clear underdog.”

For the first time, William Hill have exceeded 100,000euros in betting turnover on the French Election, and Sharpe added: “We anticipate an industry wide betting turnover exceeding half a million pounds.”

Latest William Hill Odds:

1/8 Francois Hollande
9/2 Nicolas Sarkozy
