World record setting polyurethane swim suits rejected

World swimming governing body Fina has decided to reject several hi-tech swimming suits for July's Rome world championships.

Over 100 world records were smashed in 18 months, and following such impressive stats Fina decided to review 348 suits from the 21 manufacturers.

Among the 10 rejected suits were the suits used by Alain Bernard and Frederic Bousquet when they set world records last month. Fina has not commented on whether the records will be voided.

The panel sent back over 100 of the 348 models to manufacturers, who have a month to resubmit modified suits.

The main area of controversy is that new suits are totally covered with polyurethane to aid buoyancy, whereas older designs only had polyurethane plates.
