Bolt wins Olympic 200m to complete sprint double

Usain Bolt completed an Olympic sprint double with another blistering show of speed in Thursday night’s men’s 200m final.

Bolt, who retained his 100m crown at these Games, became the first man to successfully to defend an Olympic 200m title as he raced to victory in 19.32 seconds, leaving Yohan Blake to settle for silver as Warren Weir took bronze to complete a sensational Jamaican 1-2-3 at the Olympic Stadium.

Since Blake bested Bolt at the Jamaican trials, much of the talk had questioned whether or not Bolt was still the dominant force in sprinting? The 25-year-old has silenced all of that talk with two displays of total dominance.

Bolt blasted out of the blocks and was quickly ahead of the rest of the field as the eight finalists came out of the bend, but Blake looked like he could make a fight of it as he closed the gap a little.

However, Bolt was aware of his training partner’s presence and eased away once more, and even had time to look for his fellow countryman over the final 20 metres, crossing the line while gesturing that his critics have been well and truly silenced.

Bolt finished 0.12 seconds ahead of Blake, who clocked 19.44, while Weir ensured it would be another memorable final for Jamaica by taking third place in 19.84.

Bookmaker William Hill took a bashing for the second time in a week as Bolt added another gold to his haul, and spokesman Rupert Adams told Bettingpro: “Usain Bolt made a mockery of the 1/6 we were offering and proved once again that he is the greatest sprinter the World has ever known.”

Looking ahead to 2016, William Hill fully expect Bolt to burn the bookies for a third time in Rio. They are 16/1 that he manages to win a further three gold medals. It is 6/4 that he manages two and 3/1 he wins none.
