Great Britain have recently produced some great professional boxers from the Olympic amateur ranks and the class of 2012 - both men and women - will be hoping to follow in the footsteps of Audley Harrison and Amir Khan.

Watch boxing at the Olympics live on the BBC

Harrison became a fans favourite in Sydney 2000 after winning Gold in the heavyweight division, while Khan surprised everyone by taking Silver four years later in Athens.

For the first time ever at an Olympic Games there will be three women’s boxing events with the fly, middle and light divisions being added to the schedule.

Amateur boxing rules are slightly different from the professional ranks. Both the men and women’s events are run in a single elimination format. The draws for the men’s weight categories contain either 16, 26 or 28 boxers, depending on the category. The women start at the quarter-final stage.

The winners of the two semi-finals in each weight category compete for the gold medal. The losers of the semi-finals are each awarded a bronze.

The Boxing competition got underway at the ExCel Arena on Saturday and will run until Sunday, August 11 - The medal events have been scheduled for August 9, 10, 11  and 12.
