Olympic Games schedule – what to watch on Sunday, July 29

Sunday looks set to be an exciting one with Andy Murray, Novak Djokovic, Rebecca Adlington, the Team GB men’s football team and the United States men’s basketball team all in action at London 2012.

Saturday was a disappointing day for Great Britain as Mark Cavendish failed to pick up a medal despite being the favourite going into the men’s Road Race. The Manxman’s failure means the pressure is firmly on the shoulders of Murray and Adlington to race spirits within the Team GB camp once again.

Swimming star Rebecca Adlington is up first as she begins her quest for an Olympic double at 11:23 BST. The 23-year-old became a household name four years ago when she won both the 400m freestyle and the 800m freestyle at the Beijing games. Adlington will be looking to repeat that feat in London and she must first get through the heats for the 400m freestyle. If successful, she will then swim in the final at 20:18 BST and Britain could be celebrating a first gold medal of the Games.

Andy Murray is one of Britain’s other major hopes for a gold medal, but to win it he will have to exorcise the demons of his Wimbledon disappointment. The British number one ended a 70-plus year wait for a British men’s finalist at SW19 just a few short weeks ago, but his bid for a first Grand Slam title ended in heartbreak as he was beaten by world number one Roger Federer. A gold medal at the games would go some way to easing the pain of that defeat, and Murray starts his quest against familiar foe Stanislas Wawrinka at 14:00 BST.

Murray is not the only major tennis star on court on Sunday; Novak Djokovic makes his first appearance of the Games when he tackles Fabio Fognini at 12:00 BST. The Serbian ace surrendered the world number one ranking to Federer when the Swiss legend won Wimbledon, so he will be determined to leave SW19 with the top prize on this occasion.

The men’s basketball competition gets underway on Sunday as hosts Great Britain, featuring NBA stars Luol Deng and Pops Mensa-Bonsu, begin their quest for an Olympic medal against Russia at 20:00 BST.

However, before Britain take to the court the crowd in London will be treated to their first site of the United States team that is expected to head back across the Atlantic with a gold medal. Injuries may have robbed them of some star names, but this team is absolutely loaded with finest basketball players on the planet, including the likes of Kevin Durant, Kobe Bryant and LeBron James. The US begin their quest for the top prize at 14:30 BST with a match against France, who boast a familiar face in their team in the form of Tony Park.

And of course, you cannot overlook another historic outing for the Team GB men’s football team. Their first appearance in the tournament ended in a disappointing draw against Senegal, but they will be determined to produce an improved performance against the United Arab Emirates to show their medal-winning credentials. The match gets underway at 19:45 BST.
