The Olympic Stadium opens its doors once again today as the track and field action finally gets underway at the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Friday is a big day for some of Britain’s leading athletes, with Jessica Ennis, Christine Ohuruogo and Dai Greene all in action throughout the day.

Sheffield star Ennis begins the heptathlon with the 100m hurdles at 10:05 BST, before moving onto the high jump at 11:15 BST. The heptathlon shot put event is set for 19:00 BST, and Ennis’ final action of the day will be the 200m at 20:45 BST. Meanwhile, Ohuruogu begins the defence of her women’s 400m title with the first round at 12:00 BST, while one of Britain’s other big medal hopes, Greene, competes in the first round of the men’s 400m hurdles at 11:15 BST.

With the arrival of the athletics you could be forgiven for overlooking everything else at the Games today, but that would be a big mistake because Day 7 is shaping up to be a thriller.

At the Aquatics Centre, Rebecca Adlington will look to successfully defend her women’s 800m freestyle title. The British swimmer surrendered her 400m crown by finishing third earlier this week, and she faces a fight to retain this crown with Lotte Friis expected to push her all the way at 19:45 BST.

Thursday proved to be a disappointing day for cyclist Victoria Pendleton as he was part of the GB team disqualified from the women’s team sprint. She will be looking to put that behind her when she competes for the keirin gold at 16:00, with the first round scheduled for 16:00 BST, the second round for 17:46 BST and the finals for 18:38 BST. And also at the Velodrome, Team GB defend their team pursuit title, with the first round set for 16:18 BST and the final for 17:59 BST.

Over at Wimbledon, Andy Murray is through to the semi-finals of the men’s singles tennis tournament, but standing in his way is former world number one Novak Djokovic. These two long-time friends go head-to-head after the current top-ranked player, Swiss legend Roger Federer, takes on Juan Martin Del Potro at 12:00 BST.

The women’s semi-finals are also scheduled for today as Maria Sharapova takes on Maria Kirilenko and Serena Williams meets Victoria Azarenka, from 14:00 BST, while the British combination of Murray and Laura Robson meet Lleyton Hewitt and Samantha Stosur in the mixed doubles at some point in the afternoon/evening.

And finally, at Coventry City’s Ricoh Arena home, the Team GB women’s football team will look to book their place in the semi-finals when they take on Canada at 19:45 BST.
