Olympic champion LaShawn Merritt grabbed 400m gold at the World Championships on a wet night in Berlin.

Merritt finished in 44.06 seconds, just ahead of fellow American and Olympic silver medallist Wariner, 44.60 seconds, and Renny Quow at 45.02 seconds.

"It was all about taking the race from my head to the track," said Merritt. "I had already won the race in my heart."

"I ran this race a million times in my head. At 300m I felt good and at 350m I knew I had won the race, so I just needed to bring it home." added a delighted Merritt.

Britain's Michael Bingham finished outside the 400m medals in 45.56 seconds.
