Great Britain's Phillips Idowu won the triple jump gold medal at the World Athletics Championships in Berlin, setting a personal best of 17.73 metres.

Idowu won silver at last year's Olympics and is now targeting medals at the London 2012 Olympics.

However, Olympic champion Christine Ohuruogu could not earn a medal,  finishing fifth in the women's 400m final.

Idowu is the defending Commonwealth Games and world indoor champion, and won gold by smashing his previous best of 17.68, set in 2002.

"It was a long time coming," said Idowu, whose medal was Britain's second of the Championships after Jessica Ennis's heptathlon gold.

Bet on the World Athletics Championships with Ladbrokes.
