Gender tests will be conducted on new world 800m champion Caster Semenya  according to athletics' governing body.

The International Association of Athletics Federations says it asked for the gender test almost three weeks ago after fears were raised that Semenya should not be able to compete as a woman.

A statement from IAAF said the test would be "extremely complex and difficult" and results are not due for several weeks.

Meanwhile, the South African athletics body is "completely sure" that Semenya is a female.

Semenya won goldby a 2.45 second margin, leaving her rivals trailing as she won in a time of 1.55.45.
